Ruthanna "Nancy" Schweyer, 95, passed away peacefully at home on March 16, 2011.

The long-time Gainesville resident was known for her energy and positive outlook on life. She was the first Executive Director of the Gainesville Girl Scouts and worked with the Kiwanis to build the permanent facility on N.W. 8th Ave. As a dedicated Pink Lady she was president of the Alachua General Hospital Auxiliary and logged many volunteer hours. She loved her sorority, and helped Kappa Kappa Gamma bring a chapter to the University of Florida while continuing to be a part of the alumni association.

But the Gator Nation was her passion, and she was honored on the 34th Street wall for her 90th birthday naming her Gator Granny. Mrs. Schweyer had season basketball tickets for the men's basketball team since the 1970's watching them play in the old Florida Gym to the O'Connell Center. Fans knew her as she enthusiastically followed women's sports: basketball, volleyball, softball, gymnastics, swimming and soccer. Her last outing was the 2010 Super Regional softball game that the Lady Gators won.

She never forgot her friends and family as she remembered every birthday and anniversary with a card and message. They remember her for her unique Christmas cards: posing with Albert (Gator mascot) at a game, using a chain saw to cut up a tree that fell in her backyard after the hurricane, standing by the 34th greeting and many more. Her love of travel began after she graduated from Denison University with a degree in recreation when she worked in Argentina. She later joined her daughter as a member of the pit crew for her grandson and son-in-law at sports car races throughout the United States. Other trips with family and friends took her to Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Alaska, New Zealand and Bermuda.

Mrs. Schweyer was predeceased by husband Herbert Schweyer and is survived by her two daughters, two grandsons, one great grandson and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family is appreciative of the loving care of the Comfort Keepers staff. Her daughters have complied with Nancy's request for no service, but asked that expressions of memory be sent to Haven Hospice with gratitude for the staff's loving support and care.

Nancy Schweyer, a fixture for more than 30 years at University of Florida Gators basketball, volleyball and soccer games, died at home in her sleep Wednesday. She was 95.

She loved Gators men’s basketball and held season tickets since 1976. She followed women’s basketball, volleyball and soccer, often attending games on the same day and walking between venues, said her daughter, Alyce Culpepper. She also regularly attended UF softball, swimming and gymnastics competitions. Her presence at UF sporting events gained her the nickname “Gator Granny” by other audience members over the years.

Ruthanna Warner was born in Hood River, Ore., in 1915. She rarely used her first name, preferring to go by the nickname Nancy. She graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, in 1938, majoring in recreation. After graduating from college, she went to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to start a summer camp for the daughters of American businessmen working there.

She moved to Gainesville in 1946 with her husband, the late Herbert Schweyer, a University of Florida chemical engineering professor for 31 years. He died in 1981.

Schweyer was a life member of the Alachua General Hospital Auxiliary Pink Ladies, volunteering more than 13,000 hours of service. She was a lifetime Girl Scout and helped in the effort to bring a chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma to the University of Florida.

On her 90th birthday, an anonymous friend painted a panel on the 34th Street wall in her honor. It read “Happy 90th Birthday, Gator Grandma.” That same year, Schweyer received a card signed by University of Florida coaches Billy Donovan, Becky Burleigh, Mary Wise, Carolyn Peck and University of Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley.

Schweyer had not been able to attend games in the last three years since she fell and had trouble walking.

Nancy Schweyer is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Schweyer of Gainesville and Alyce Culpepper of Plantation; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
