Richard was the son of Edward Crathorne Dale and Matilda Dale nee Evans. He was the grandson of "Commodore Richard Dale, the associate of John Paul Jones in the War of 1812."
Richard married Anna Stites Williamson on the 8 of Jan 1868 in Philadelphia. They had a son Edward C. Dale in 1874.
Richard was a "well-known banking financier in Philadelphia. He was a Director of Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Railroad, a Reading Company subsidiary. Richard was also on the Board of Directors of the Adams Express Company and he sat on several boards of the companies of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company. Additionally, he was the Vice President of the Reliance Insurance Company."
Richard was just as "well known as the President of the Order of the Cincinnati. He possessed the sword of Commodore John Paul Jones which had been received from Louis XIV of France for his valiant services in the Mediterranean Sea."
