HUBBARD — Helen L. Simons, 92, of Hubbard, formerly of Warren, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019, at Select Specialty at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, following a courageous, six-year battle against pulmonary fibrosis.
Helen was born March 27, 1926, in Calla,Ohio, a daughter of the late Frank J. and Ota F. Paulin Charlton. She was an honor student at Goshen High School, where she was a member of the high school band and Latin Club. Years later, she earned a certified nursing assistant degree. Helen enjoyed horseback riding, sending and receiving cards, gardening, riding in 20-mile bikeathons, and Christmas was a very special time for her. She loved to drive and was always there for anyone needing a ride, or enjoyed taking her friends and family members out for a day of lunch and shopping.
In 1943, at Timberlanes in Salem, Helen learned to bowl and spent the next 40 years working in all phases of bowling. She helped manage the Rollerbowl in Willoughby for four years and then moved to Warren, where she served as treasurer for numerous leagues and the Warren Women’s Bowling Association. Helen also worked in the lounge at both Laurel and Echo Lanes in Warren. The highlight of Helen’s bowling career came in 1962, when she became a Lifetime Member of the National Les Dames de 700 Club after rolling a 279 game and 704 actual series and was also a lifetime member of the National 600 Club where she also held the office of treasurer. Another highlight for Helen was in 1964, winning the 1st annual Y.B.A. Mother-Daughter Family Twosome placing them ninth nationally. In 1990, she was inducted into the Warren Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
Bowling provided Helen with lots of travel, which she loved, along with making many friendships near and far that lasted a lifetime. She also met her husband, Lawrence “Larry” Simons through bowling and they married Feb. 16, 1974. He preceded her in death in 2018, after 43 years of marriage. They were the first husband and wife couple to be elected into their respective Hall of Fames.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Lynda (Harry) Owen of Liberty; grandson, Kevin Scott (Marla) Morton of Austintown; great-grandchildren, Connor and Dylan Morton; step-grandchildren, Dennis (Pam) and Tim (Brooke) Owen; and also step-great grandchildren, Dennis Jr. “DJ,” Allyssa and Grace Owen; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her first husband, Welday McAfee Adrian in 1962; their son, Richard Adrian in 2012; brother, Leonard Charlton; as well as her sisters, Agnes Archer, Ruth Latta and Olive Tillery.
Friends and relatives may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2019, at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, 533 North Park Ave., Warren, Ohio 44481, with a memorial service immediately following at 1 p.m., where Pastor Jim Dittmar will officiate. Interment will take place in Howland Township Cemetery.
