E. W. Leatherwood

On April 25, the Lord of the universe and creator of all things saw fit in His wisdom to take from our midst E.W. Leatherwood, of Victoria. Mr. Leatherwood had gone to Burnett, hoping that the change would benefit him but became weaker shortly after his arrival there and grew steadily worse until the end.

Decedent was born in Louns (Lowndes) County Alabama, February 19, 1860, being 63 years, 2 months and 6 days of age at the time of his death. He is survived by his widow, 7 children: W.W. and T.M. Leatherwood of Victoria County; R.A. and W.B. Leatherwood of Marshall, and P.C. Leatherwood of Houston; and Mrs. Eliza Stanley and Mrs. Nona Morgan, both of Victoria; 16 grandchildren; several brothers and sisters, and a host of friends to mourn his loss. He was laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery, Victoria, Rev. Geo. A. Stewart, of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

With his parents he came to Texas in 1869, and in 1881 was married to Miss Narcissus Payne, who survives him. At the age of 19 years, Mr. Leatherwood professed faith in his Lord and Redeemer and lived a consistent Christian life until death. He could say with the apostle Paul: "I have fought a good fight; I have kept the faith; I have finished my course; Therefore, there is a crown of righteousness laid up for me in that mansion not made with hands--eternally in the heavens--not for me only, but for every one that loves his appearing." We can say as one who knows whereof he speaks, that to know Mr. Leatherwood was to love him. To the bereaved ones we would commend them to live as he lived that they may be reunited in that blissful clime where there is no night, no sickness, no sorrow, no pain, and no parting with loved ones; for the Lord is the light and all is happiness, rejoicing, pleasure and rejoicing throughout all eternity in that world that shall never end, for our Savior has promised it all to His children who live in accordance with His will.

Gravesite Details

No stone has been located and Evergreen says their records--which are spotty for pre-1950s--does not show location of burial plots for Elijah and Narcissa. So either family didn't buy stone or it has subsided into the soil.
