He was born September 21, 1921 in Mosinee, son of the late Louis and Edna (Ahlquist) Ahrens. He was baptized in the Christian faith and later confirmed his faith at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Marathon.
On October 27, 1945, he married Lydia Hemmrich at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Marathon. She survives.
In 1941, Elmer graduated from Barber School in Milwaukee, where he also worked at Mader's Restaurant. Following his marriage to Lydia, he worked at Menzner Lumber Company in Marathon. In 1947, they moved to Wausau, where he worked at Fair Appliance delivering bottled gas. Later on, Elmer started his own bottled gas business which he operated for 15 years and also worked part-time at the Record Herald. In 1968, he worked at Wausau Homes in the plumbing department and also security for 13 years. In 1980, Elmer worked part-time at Marathon Travel. During his employment there he had the opportunity to travel to England. It was a trip he truly enjoyed. He returned to work part-time at the Daily Herald and retired from there in 1990.
Following his retirement, he kept busy working part-time at Sam's Club for four years and also worked for the City Pages until 2010. Elmer also found time to sharpen knifes, scissors, lawnmower blades and skates in his shop in the basement. He enjoyed his work at every job he held and had a strong work ethic.
He enjoyed volunteering at Aspirus Wausau Hospital and Colonial Manor Nursing Home. Elmer was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau and served as an elder, counted collections, taped services and assembled bulletins weekly. He also served over 25 years with the Wausau Emergency Police.
Among his favorite pastimes, he enjoyed playing the accordion and later the organ. He also loved polka music and enjoyed the polka groups and other entertainment at the Renaissance. Elmer and Lydia took many chartered bus trips and loved spending time with their grandsons, family and friends. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life always with a smile and sense of humor. Talking with others and joking around always made him happy.
He loved and was very proud of his family.
Survivors include, his wife, Lydia Ahrens, Wausau; daughter, Karen (Russ) Schleicher, Wausau; daughter-in-law, Montine Ahrens, Maple Grove, Minn.; brother, Melvin (Clara) Ahrens, Glendale, Wis.; sister, Irmgard (Gerald) Beilke, Weston; six grandsons, Austin, Preston, and Collin Ahrens, Seth (Claire) Schleicher, Dylan Schleicher and Troy Tushoski; two great-granddaughters, Evelyn Schleicher and Harper Tushoski; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Werner; and his son, Dale Ahrens.
Funeral services will be at Noon on Monday, February 9, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau. Rev. Zach Holdorf will officiate.
