On June 1st, 2007, five days after her 101st birthday, Laura Ziehr's prayers were answered and her God gave her the gift of eternal peace.

Laura C. Ziehr was born on May 27, 1906, in the town of Arthur near Cadott, the third child of Peter and Julia (Christiansen) Emerson. She spent her early years and attended school in that same township where her father owned and operated a cheese factory and store. She was baptized by the pastor of the family church, Big Drywood Lutheran, where she was also confirmed.

It was at a ball game in Cadott where Laura met her husband to be, Ed. She was attracted to the handsome young baseball player. Laura and Ed were married, and celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in 1987, a few months before Ed passed away.

Cadott, Wis., was Laura's home for her entire adult life before residing at the Chippewa Manor Nursing and Retirement home in her last years.

As a life long member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cadott, she taught Sunday school, was an active member of the ladies aid, the LWML, sewed quilts for missions with the women of the church, and served on many committees.

A joy of her life was meeting with the "girls" in the local knitting club to work on projects. Before her eyesight deteriorated, Laura's hobbies were crocheting and sewing special items for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laura passes her gift of life on to her beloved family. She has two sons, Ronald (Joan Komro) of Chippewa Falls and Kenneth (Lynne Nelson) who live in Eau Claire.

Ron and Joan's children are son, John, who with his wife Rita, lives in Colorado Springs, Colo., and daughter, Ronda and her daughter, Laura Ann (named for her great-grandmother) of Chippewa Falls.

Ken and Lynne's son, Joe and his wife Mauricea have three children, Emerson (also named for great-grandmother), Esmé, and Simon and their daughter, Margret-Melissa who has one child, Sophia Lynne, all of Eau Claire.

Other survivors are sister-in-law and good friend, Helen Emerson of Cadott; and many nieces and nephews.

Her mother and father, sister, Evelyn Gardner, and brothers, Karles and Albert Emerson preceded Laura in death.

A service of celebration will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 215 East Seminary Street, Cadott, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 7. Visitation for friends and family will be at Leiser Funeral Home in Cadott from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, and from 1 to 2 p.m. before services at the church. Interment will be in Brooklawn Cemetery in Cadott

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice.
