Jesse Ken Updike, 84, of Timberville, VA died February 25, 2019 at Willow Estates.

He was born June 27, 1934 in Front Royal to the late Edwin Grafton Updike, Sr. and Margaret Fox Updike.

Jesse worked for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for almost 30 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Game Warden. He had also worked as a Federal Game Warden for a period of several years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran during the Korean War; a member of FOP, the NRA, and the Izaak Walton League.

On August 20, 1952, he married the former Betty Mae Smith, who preceded him in death August 8, 2018.

Surviving are five sons, Teddy Updike of Richmond, Mark Updike and wife Sharon of Broadway, Justin Updike of Timberville, Kevin Updike and wife Lisa of Dayton, and Curtis Updike of Harrisonburg; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.

Pastor Dan Garber will conduct a funeral service 10:30 AM Monday at Grandle Funeral Home chapel in Broadway. Burial with military honors will be held at Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.

The family will receive friends from 4 – 6 PM Sunday at Grandle Funeral Home. Friends may stop by or call the funeral home after noon Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 500 Ray C Hunt Dr #6, Charlottesville, VA 22903; Alzheimer’s Association, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901; or VA Game Commission, P.O. Box 90778, Henrico, VA 23228.
