​Thomas Dyer Mudd, born June 6, 1861, was the third of Sam and Sarah Mudd's nine children. He was 22 years old when his father passed away in 1883. As the oldest son, Tom ran the Mudd farm with his brothers and sisters for a few years, but eventually left for city life, first in Philadelphia, and then in Baltimore. Deciding to follow in his father's medical footsteps, he studied medicine at Baltimore's College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating in 1894.
After obtaining his medical degree, Tom set up his medical practice in the Anacostia section of Washington, D.C. In 1898, he married Mary Elizabeth Hartigan. They had four children before Mary passed away in 1917. They were:

Tom married again, in 1922, to Amelia Baker.
Dr. Mudd died on February 11, 1929 in Washington, D.C. He is interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Washington, D.CDr. Thomas D. Mudd was the son of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd.
