Jim Atkinson of Bicknell Dies

Operated Ice and Coal Company

BICKNELL - James W Atkinson, 82, ice and coal dealer in Bicknell, director of a Bicknell bank and prominent citizen, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at 9:10 a.m., Wednesday.

Mr. Atkinson had been in uncertain health for the last four years, but was continuing his business activities. He left his home, 711 North Main street, Wednesday morning, and drove as usual to his coal yard at 302 White River avenue. He was in the office when he was fatally stricken.

He had operated the Bicknell Ice and Coal Yards in Bicknell and Sullivar for the last 47 years.

He was director of the Bicknell Trust and Savings company, and was a member of the Indiana Association of Ice Industries.

He was a member of the Bicknell Christian church.

Mr. Atkinson was a native of Edwardsport, born March 7, 1877, a son of Mathew and Helen Williams Atkinson.

His wife, Maude, died on Nov. 30, 1958.

He is survived by a son, John David Atkinson of Bicknell, two daughters, Mrs. Brinton (Esther) Wheat of Bicknell, and Mrs. Virgil (Mildred) Edwards of Indianapolis; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother and sister, Earl Atkinson and Mrs. Oval Harbaugh, both of Bicknell.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday at the Wampler funeral chapel in Bicknell, with the Rev. David DeBoer officiating. Burial will be in the Edwartsport I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Friends may call at Wampler's after 4 p.m., Friday.
