She was born in Gloucestershire to Francis Bratt. A talented pianist, she was orphaned in 1908. In 1909 she met John Ronald Reul Tolkien to whom she was eventually married in 1916. She was the inspiration for her husband's character Luthien Tinuviel, the most beautiful creature in his personal mythology. Edith died on November 29th, 1971 at the age of 82.
