He was married on September 25, 1890 in Hickman County, Tennessee to Frances Jonnie Lancaster (1864-1948), the daughter of Reverend Gabriel Andrew Lancaster (1813–1866) and Nancy Sarah (Horner) Lancaster (1826–1910).
A self-employed contract painter living at 1010 Shelby Avenue in Nashville, John was 84 years old and a widower when he died at home of bronchopneumonia and flu on March 21, 1952. Burial was the next day in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
