In the thick of World War II, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, was stationed in several locations in the United States, and served in the 413th Fighter Squadron Single Engine as part of the 414th Fighter Group Single Engine on Iwo Jima, spending his first night on that island in a fox hole in the volcanic sand of the beach.
