Harvey L. Gard, familiarly known as Lot, died at his home in Winter Haven, Florida, June 16, 1931.
He was born at Wingville, Wisconsin, March 10, 1848, being 83 years, 3 months and 6 days old. He came to Kansas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Gard, when a boy. He was one of the successful farmers and stock raisers of the county. He was a man of strict integrity, upright, in all his dealings. He was a man of strong convictions and the courage to do what he believed to be right. He took an active part in the up building of his community and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of those with whom he came in contact. He married Miss Anna McMurry, November 27, 1877, at the home of the brides's brother, H.F. Robbins, near Wheaton. No children were born to this union. They lived for many years on the farm now owned by John J. Siddens near the mouth of Wilson Creek, moving from there to Westmoreland and later to Fostoria where his wife died March 27, 1907.
In September, 1908, he married Mrs. Sudie Stoner. Soon after his marriage he and his wife moved to Winter Haven, Florida. Here for twenty two years he took an active part in the up-building of that part of Florida.
M. M. Lee editor of the Winter Haven Chief and formerly of the St. Marys Eagle in this county published the following tribute to Mr. Gard:
"The writer has known "Uncle Lot" Gard for nearly forty years and has never known a nicer man or truer friend. He lived a clean honorable life, was honest and just in his dealings with his fellowmen. By his pleasing ways and kindly acts he endeared himself to his friends who will remember him with affection as long as time with them remains. His life and works have left an imprint on the community, for a good that will circle out on the sea of time and be to Harvey L. Gard a monument, that will endure long after shafts of marble reared by loving kindred shall have crumbled to dust and been buried by the drifting sands of time."
Mr. Gard is survived by his wife and by one sister, Mrs. Rachel Mack of Topeka.
The body, accompanied by Mrs. H. L. Gard and her son, Frank Stoner, was brought for burial in the Moodyville cemetery. Short funeral services were held at the grave at 3 p.m. and were conducted by Rev. W. N. Smitheram, pastor of the Westmoreland M.E. church. Among relatives from a distance who attended the funeral services at Moodyville were the following: Mrs. Lot Gard and Frank S. Stoner, Winter Haven, Florida; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gouff, Beatrice; Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Spaulding, Payette, Idaho; Mrs. Rachel Mack, Topeka; C.C. Stauffer, Frankfort; Harry Stauffer, Olsburg; George Stauffer, Montgall, Arkansas; Mrs. C. C. Townsley and daughter, Zora Girard; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Holuba and Mrs. Mayme Gaud.
Friends from a distance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Wirt Crowl, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank McAlister and daughter, Grace, of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. John T. Barr, W. H. Walden, Garrett Werning, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Scritchfield, Mr. and Mrs. Gifford Abbott, and Marshall Selby, Manhattan; Paul Heisler, St. Marys; Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Dale, Mrs. L. Summers and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Runyan, Wheaton, Dr. and Mrs. W. P. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Robbins, and Mr. and Mrs. Otto Klapp, Onaga.
