Hannah Higley was one of two daughters born to Dudley Higley and Eunice Stratton of Simsbury, Connecticut. Her older sister's name was Lois.

In about 1781, Hannah married David Messenger, son of Nathaniel Messenger and Eleanor Griffin of Granby, Connecticut. Hannah and David were the parents of eight children: Grove, Sinthy, Hannah, David Jr., Samuel, Campbell, Harriet and Forest.

Hannah moved from Connecticut to Ohio with her husband and children in 1804 as a member of the Licking Land Company. This group of brave pioneers were seeking more and better opportunities for themselves and their children and wanted to move where there were fewer people and land was less expensive.

Hannah died in 1815. She was only 52 years old. She is buried in historic Old Colony Burying Ground next to her husband and son Campbell. It is noted in town records that her little granddaughter, Eliza, daughter of her son, Grove, was buried first in the plot in 1806.

--------------
When the area was excavated June 21, 2012, shards of Hannah's headstone were found. Very important pieces that prove beyond doubt that it is her headstone. You can read more about all that on Facebook at 'David and Hannah Messenger.'

The new headstone was sited in 2016 and a dedication took place on April 30, 2017. The Facebook page also has information on the dedication.
