ELON Mr. L. Bascom Moore, 71, of 102 Turnbury Place, died at 1:57 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Edgewood Place of Burlington, after two years critical illness.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Davis Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Dodson. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Born in Graham, Alamance County, he was the son of the late Clem Bascom and the late Joy Wood Moore.

A graduate of Graham High School and Elon College, Mr. Moore was one of the founders of Burlington Chemical Company, Inc., which was incorporated in Burlington in 1953. He served as operations manager from 1955 and was promoted to CEO by the companys founder, Samuel Ross, in 1968. This was a post he held until 2004. Under his leadership, Burlington Chemical grew from six to 160 employees and expanded to an additional facility in 1985, at Willow Springs Lane in Burlington. In the early 1990s, a new synthesis facility was commissioned in his honor.

He was active in the local community as an avid supporter of Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, the Graham Fire Department and founding supporter of Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was a member of Davis Street United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Utley and Mrs. Helen Harrington and brother Mr. Garland Moore.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Judy Rose Moore of the home; daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Fiks and husband Terry and their children, Lindsay and Gray of Burlington; Mrs. Joni M. Barnhardt and husband Harold and their child, Adam of Whitsett; sons, Mr. Samuel B. Moore and wife Frances and their children, Chelsea and Donny of Elon; Mr. Jeffrey A. Moore and wife Cheila and their children, Desiree and Austin of Burlington; sisters, Mrs. Opal Narron of Graham and Mrs. Barbara Lowe and husband Elwyn of Burlington.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Davis Street United Methodist Church and other times they will be at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or to Davis Street United Methodist Church, 606 E. Davis Street, Burlington, NC 27215.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks for the loving care and assistance to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell and to the doctors and staff of Edgewood Place of Burlington.
