He born in the Pleasant Valley area of Mobile, AL, and was the fourth of the six children born to Ralph Farnell, Sr. and Alexandria May Hunter Farnell. He lived in Mississippi, Michigan, Alabama, and Georgia. He was a graduate of Murphy High School and studied at Spring Hill College. He served in the Army National Guard and earned his D.V.M. and M.S. degrees from Auburn University, and his PhD from Michigan State University. His was Chair of the Veterinary Sciences Department at Mississippi State University, Director of the Department of Comparative Medicine at the University of South Alabama, and research scientist at Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, AL. He was predeceased by his parents; son, Daniel Reese Farnell, Jr.; and siblings, Siblings: Ralph Farnell, Jr., Anne Hunter Farnell Burgess, Gerald Corley Farnell (1930-2001), and Marilyn May Farnell Holladay. He leaves his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Williamson Farnell; three daughters, Andrea Farnell Nicholas (Stephen Nicholas), Cynthia C Farnell (Dan Powell) - both of Atlanta, GA, Evelyn Farnell Jackson (Dr. Colin Jackson); twin grandchildren, Owen and William Jackson - all of Oxford, MS; and sister, Judy Farnell McMichael of Mobile, AL.
