Dorothy K. Wharton, died at her home with her family on Saturday, November 4, 2000. She was 80 years old. A lifelong resident of the Richmond area, the former Dorothy Louise Kennedy grew up in Highland Park. She married James Thomas Wharton on March 5, 1949 and began making plans for the future. A former employee of Philip Morris, she left her job with the company to take care of her family. In 1958, Dorothy and James and their new son, David, moved from Richmond to Mechanicsville where she remained until her death. Her husband, James, passed away on September 4, 1987. Dorothy Wharton was also a longtime member of the Virginia Civil Air Patrol, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. She had devoted much of her time to supporting that organization for which she served with distinction since 1974. She is survived by her son, David A. (Pete) Wharton of Mechanicsville; her sister, Pearl Kennedy Jones of Glen Allen; and by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 12, at 3 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to the Virginia Civil Air Patrol, the Mechanicsville Vol. Fire Department or the East Hanover Vol. Rescue Squad.
