Marlin Keith Scarlett, 93, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2019. He now joins his beloved wife, Mary Alice to continue their heavenly adventures.
If you knew our father, he loved visiting with people about Mom, his kids and grandkids, his siblings and the Navy. At the end of any conversation you learned something about each of these favorite topics! Late in life, Dad developed a love for coloring. He absolutely loved talking about how he picked the colors for the pictures but his real joy was giving those pictures away. Dad’s smile, warm greeting, and sense of humor could brighten the moment, and did for many of us.
Marlin was the first of 13 children born on January 29, 1926 to Harold and Grace Scarlett of Jackson County, Kansas. The family consisted of 6 boys and 7 girls of which there are 5 still living today. Preceding him in death includes brothers: Harlan, DeVere and Everett Scarlett, and sisters: Arlene Gier, Marilyn Kesinger, Jane Etzel and Neola Risinger.
Marlin attended country school through eighth grade, then Valley Falls High School graduating in 1944. Early in his senior year, Marlin decided to join the Navy and take advantage of the V-5A program. This program offered an opportunity for a college degree and then a path to flight school. Marlin was inducted into the Navy, accepted into the V-5A program, and on June 15, 1944 reported for duty at Washburn University in Topeka Kansas to start his education. In July 1945, this program was closed and most at Washburn were transferred to boot camp and then on to other stations. Marlin served his country through two tours in Pacific campaigns, in Guam and Japan. Marlin was assigned to a repair ship and it was used, among other duties, to sink captured Japanese submarines.
When Marlin returned home from the Navy in August, 1946, he farmed and worked for his father driving a semi-truck. Shortly after arriving home, he reconnected with Mary Alice Gutschenritter and they were married on December 21, 1946. After many years of farming and driving semi-trucks, Marlin and Mary moved to Sabetha Kansas in 1957 where he managed the Sabetha Coop (later becoming the Farmers Coop Elevator). The family moved to Mayetta Kansas in 1959 where Marlin managed local elevators. In 1962, he took the opportunity to move back to Sabetha to work with Mid-America Dairy Corporation and remained there for twenty-two years.
Marlin was devoted to his wife, Mary Alice throughout their 64 years of marriage. In their later years, Marlin was the primary caregiver for Mary. When she moved to the Apostolic Christian Nursing Home in October 2010, Marlin moved to the Apostolic Christian South Village Apartments to be close to her. He spent most of his days walking the halls to her room, caring for her and visiting with those who came or passed by. Mary Alice passed away on May 25, 2011.
Marlin and Mary had five children who continue to share great memories of their parents: Clifford (Ardith Kesler), Auburn WA; Cheryl (David Scoby), Livingston TX; Marlene Scarlett, Fenton MI; Mark (Connie Bartram) Spokane WA; and Joan (Gary Bayens), Lawrence, KS. He was very proud of his children and loved to tell stories of their (and spouses) lives. There are also 11 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 20 great- grandchildren, 1 step great -grandchild, and 1 great great- grandchild who have memories or will learn all about Marlin and Mary as they grow.
Marlin is also survived by brothers Gary (Kay), Topeka KS, and John (Sandy), Wellsville; Sisters: Anita Graham, Meriden; Leota Boltz, Topeka,KS; and Helen (Hoot) Gibson, Rapid City, SD. Mary Alice’s two siblings, Irene Marsi, Santa Barbara,CA and John (Sharon) Gutschenritter, Raymore MO also survive and loved Marlin as a brother.
As per Dad’s wishes, he will be cremated and buried at a later date at the Albany Cemetery.
