James W. "Jim" Varner, Sr., 75, died Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. He was born May 19, 1943 in Pueblo, Colorado the son of Carl Varner, Sr. and Elsie (Baker) Varner.

Jim lived in various places throughout his life before moving to Garden City in 1997. He has lived in Garden City since. Jim served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1966 as a heavy weapons infantryman. He worked as the owner and operator of Varner Welding Service and was a member of the NRA. He enjoyed fishing, playing the guitar, spending time with his grandchildren, and was an avid collector.

On October 30, 1967, he married Judith K. Drake in LaJunta, Colorado. She survives. Other survivors include 6 children Carl Wesley Varner of Fowler, Co, Diana Milburn & husband Jeff of Rolla, Ks, Kelly Ragsdale & husband Paul of Skiatook, Ok, James Wesley Varner, Jr. & wife Deana of Granvois Mills, Mo, Ronnie Varner & wife Mary Jane of Duncan, Ok, & Michael Varner & wife Alecia of Elkhart, Ks; 3 brothers Phillip Varner of Crescent, Ok, Bill Varner of LaJunta, Co, & Carl Varner, Jr. of Holcomb, Ks; 2 sisters Charlene Manweiler of Pueblo, Co and Nancy Sechrist of Montrose, Co; 16 grandchidlren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Jim is preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers Gene Varner and Andy Varner; a sister Edna Stockton; and 2 grandsons Colton Rogers and Josh Kreklau.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Robert Trosper officiating. Military funeral honors will be conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard. A private family interment will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours. The family requests memorials given to the Jim Varner Memorial fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
