Mina was the daughter of William F. and Wilhelmina (Betz) Schrafft, both of whom immigrated from Germany. Her father arrived at Boston on Nov. 15, 1851 and her mother on May 15, 1852. They were married at Boston in 1852. Additional children born to the couple included Carl, born in 1857; Frances K., born in 1858; Louisa, born in 1865; William in 1868; and George Frederick in 1871.

Her father, who worked as a Confectioner, founded the W.F. Schrafft candy company in 1864 and saw it grow into one of the world's largest. "The Schrafft name became synonymous with boxed chocolates, and the empire grew to include ice cream and a chain of popular restaurants."

For all the happiness that Mina's father brought to people, his family suffered through the pain of losing little Mina, when she died of swelling to the brain, or Hydrocephalus, at the family's home located at 85 Eliot St. in what is currently Boston's Chinatown neighborhood. The Boston death record confirms Mina was interred at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Her mother, who died in Somerville, MA in August 1900 was buried, according to the death record, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Her father, who died in 1906, purchased a niche for storing cremation ashes in the Lower Columbarium at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, although from a picture posted on the father's Find a Grave memorial it appears empty.
