Born May 1, 1932 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Raleigh White Hedrick and Pearl Adkins Hedrick. She was predeceased by her husband, S.H. “Pete” Crawley, Jr.; four sisters, Hazel Edwards, Grace Bousman, Nadine Yeatts, and Betty Jean Howell; and three brothers, J.K. Hedrick, Clark Hedrick, and Van Hedrick. Mrs. Crawley was member and former member of the year of Gretna Christian Church, and a former Sunday school teacher at West End Church of Christ. She worked many jobs including working for the Pittsylvania County School System, PTA secretary, the Central Motor Company, the Town of Gretna, the Altavista Insurance Company, and with the Pittsylvania County Treasurer’s Office. Mrs. Crawley was a former secretary for the Gretna Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Eastern Star #118 for over fifty years, a member of the Gretna Home Extension Club; and a Charter member of the Gretna Lioness Club serving as former secretary, treasurer and Lioness of the year. She also was involved in the planning commission for the Pittsylvania County Bicentennial and a member of the COE Advisory Committee. Joyce and her husband, Pete were named Citizens of the Year in 1969. She loved flowers; she loved planting flowers in her yard, decorating for the holidays, and decorating for church and other events through the years.
She is survived by one daughter, Melody Margrave and husband, Richard of Ridgeway; one sister, Phyllis Derby of Clay, NY; and one grandson, Zachary A. Margrave of Ridgeway.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2019 at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Lee Ashley, Minister. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
