Joseph Hoskins, son of Eli and Amy Gossett Hoskins, was born November 25, 1814. He was educated at the school of Dr. Horace Cannon, the forerunner of the New Garden Boarding School and Guilford College. He was a landowner, a prosperous planter, and owned a tannery. He acquired the Charles Bruce plantation at Summerfield, Guilford County, North Carolina, where he established himself and his family in 1845. He died February 29, 1890, and is buried at the New Garden Cemetery, Greensboro, North Carolina. He married Mary Johnson
