This appears to be Aaron Pumphrey, born in 1856 to Dr Reason Beal Pumphrey and Elizabeth Fly Boyce. He was on the 1860 census in Williamson Co Texas as Aaron Knight age 3. His father died in 1857 and his mother remarried to Dr. D F Knight.
Aaron was on the 1870 Census with his brother John B and were in Austin as teenagers with their grandmother, Elizabeth Boyce age 65. Their brother R Beal age 16 was living with Willian Boyce next door. Their mother died about 5 months earlier.
On the 1880 census Aaron and his brother John were in Jones County, listed as stock raisers and had two men in their household listed as servants with occupation as stock herders.
By 1882 John had gone back to Williamson County and married . However John owned the 10X ranch in Stonewall County.
John's son, William Henry Pumphrey, wrote in a history of Stonewall County Texas.
"My Uncle Aaron Pumphrey is buried on the FlatTop Mountain. He died from smallpox. A Mexican man who had already had small pox stayed with him and later came to Wiliamson County to tell my Father of Uncle Aaron's death. They were on their way back from a trail drive to Kansas when he took sick and died." Aaron had some ranching interest when he died.
His brother John B Pumphrey and family owned and operated he 10X Ranch in Stonewall County Texas for many years.

Sarah Moneta Carr Newman 1906-1996 wrote an article in the History of Stonewall County about the grave of Aaron Pumphrey.
She recalled her dad telling what happened. The Pumphrey Brothers, John and Aaron were early day ranchers. John Humphrey was the owner of the 10X ranch and Aaron had other ranching interest.
Aaron had some spanish men working for him who came down with smallpox. Sarah Moneta's great grandfather loaned Aaron a large military tent from the civil war so Aaron could help take of the men. He nailed a tub to the top of a post nearby to leave a list of their needs. Her father who was only 7 at the time would ride to the camp and take the list , pick up the supplies and take them back to the tub. Aaron nursed the men through it, but failed to recover when he caught it.
I remember Johnnye Pumphrey (1897-1985) coming to ask papa where his grave was located. They wanted to erect a headstone. We found it on a hill overlooking a creek with running water. Located on a ranch that now belongs to Swenson Cattle Co. (Probably in the late 40's to early 50's)
A History of Stonewall County book 1979
It is possible that in 1884 Aaron Pumphrey may have owned this property, which Swenson Land & Cattle Co purchased later.

SMS Ranch lore has it that he died of Scarlet Fever and was buried with all his possessions at the old headquarters near Flat Top . The grave is well marked by large stones. The gravestone was set at a much later date. There is an identical grave stone in the Old Glory Cemetery that was set in 1946 for R F Tomlinson 62 years later
