Mary Goss

Mary was born to Charles and Doris Loos on June 23, 1947, in Richland, WA. The second of two girls, Mary and her family moved to Grandview, WA when she was two years old. In 1953, the Loos family moved to Tacoma, WA, where she lived until she left for Western Washington College in Bellingham, WA. In 1967, she married John Schultz and they lived in Oak Harbor while John was stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Their two children, Adriane and Laura, were born in 1970 and 1971, respectively. Although she was raised in the Methodist church, Mary did not have a personal relationship with the Lord until after Adriane’s death in 1971. She would explain that she had been in despair after the death of her baby and Christ woke her up. Her love of and devotion to her Savior permeated the rest of her life.
In 1979, Mary and John moved to Omak, where he pastored the First Baptist Church of Omak. Mary later returned to school and received her nursing degree in 1985, and then worked in Oncology at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. After she married her second husband, John “Pal” Goss, she moved to East Wenatchee in 1986. She loved being a home health/hospice nurse for Central Washington Hospital, enjoying her patients and coworkers both (although she did not enjoy the necessary laborious charting).
The daughter of educators, Mary believed in the power of education for women and was an active member of P.E.O., a philanthropic organization that promotes women’s education. A member of Eastmont Baptist Church, she started and led a ministry that reached out to homebound members.
During her life, Mary quilted many quilts; stood in the rain in Red Square in Moscow, Russia; watched endless hours of figure skating; giggled with her coworkers; was a “Basement Babe”; and laughed and prayed with friends from church. She bought too many souvenirs in London; comforted her patients; wrangled the family pets; climbed the steps to the Supreme Court; explored a medieval mine in the Czech Republic; loved Chopin; and took good care of Pal. She was a follower of Jesus, a phenomenal nurse, a gentle and faithful friend, a devoted wife, and the best mama ever.
After a long illness, she died peacefully at home on December 15, 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Schultz, and her granddaughter, Lydia Mary Schultz, both of East Wenatchee.
Services will be held at Eastmont Baptist Church on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. A Private Interment will be held in her hometown of Tacoma. Donations may be made to The Navigators (www.navigators.org).
