Samuel Morgan was born in Tennessee, the son of Revolutionary War soldier Isaac John Morgan, of Virginia, and his wife Judith Smith (his daughter Judith's 1880 and 1900 census records indicate he was born in Virginia; however, his his parents were married in Tennessee the year before he was born). He appears in the 1830 census record of his father Isaac Morgan, in Lowndes County Mississippi, where Isaac had settled after those lands were opened to settlement. He next appears in the record in 1832, when he married Nancy Hart in or near what would later become Tishomingo County, MS; she was the daughter of John Hart of North Carolina and his wife Mary, originally of Pennsylvania. In 1835 he patented land in Lowndes County Mississippi, at the same time Nancy Hart's father John Hart did the same. They all appear again in the 1837 census in Lowndes County MS; their first 4 children, Mary Marcella, James Narcius, Essy, and one other son who died young, were born there. In 1840 Samuel and Nancy show up, again with Nancy's parents, in Saline Township, Sevier County, AR; their first child born in Arkansas was Isaac, born there in 1841, their daughter Judith was born there in 1844.

Samuel died sometime before October 1845, when Nancy remarried Lewis P. Smith. John Hart, in 1846, named the children of "my deceased son in law" Samuel Morgan in his will; he also named Samuel's wife wife Nancy as "Nancy Smith," confirming that Nancy had already remarried to Lewis P. Smith by the time John Hart's will was written.

Details of Samuel's death and burial are unknown.
