His varied career had included cattle ranching, logging, construction work and service as a law-enforcement officer, before he acquired his service station and garage at Show Low. He has served as both police chief and fire chief in his home city.

He is a native of Show Low, born on October 24, 1909, son of Joseph E. and Jennie Peterson. His father, born at Provo, Utah was a cattle and sheep rancher. He came to Arizona at the age of thirteen, walking the entire distance between Provo and Show Low diving cattle. Jennie Peterson was a native of Pinedale.

At Show Low, James D. Stock attended public elementary school, and he graduated from Snowflake High School in 1927. For a time he engaged in cattle ranching with his father, and, in 1929, he began logging, being employed by the Standard Mill until 1932. He next entered road construction work, being a mechanic on heavy-duty equipment for a period of two years. Mr Stock's duties as a law enforcement officer began with his service as a deputy in the office of the sheriff of Navajo County. After a number of years' experience in that capacity, he became chief of police for Show Low in 1944, remaining as such until 1948. In addition, he has also served as the community's fire chief.

While heading the police department, Mr. Stock began his business career, leasing a service station and garage.

Mr. Stock's hobby is firearms and reloading cartridges, and he is a member of the Show Low Rifle and Pistol Club. Like so many other prominent citizens of this region of Arizona, he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Politically he is democrat.

At Show Low, in 1931, James D. Stock married Thora Penrod. Born at Pinetop, Arizona, in 1914, she is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Penrod, long-time residents of that place. Mr. and Mrs,. Stock's children are as follows: James A., John Ardel, Dallas, and Lloyd.
