They had two sons (Jere William and Ward) and three daughters (Emily Antoinette, Lillian James and Henrietta Longstreet). James was blinded at age 13 from a gunpowder accident yet he served in the Mississippi Legislature from 1884 to 1888. Sometimes, he took his young son Jere with him to Jackson when the Legislature was in session."
