James and Bessie lived in the canyon down by Ranger, Texas before coming to Throckmorton County. There they farmed the land raising grain for feed and bread, suger cane for sorgum syrup, vegetables for canning, hogs for lard, soap and meat. The hogs were also butchered and sold in the coal mining town of Strawn for money to buy the few staples needed such as salt, sugar, soda and fabric for clothing. Bessie dried fruit for winter months, washed clothing on a rub-board, and her children never went to bed without a starch-ironed night gown on- she made them from the flour sacks they got at the mill. James played the fiddle for sqaure dances to add to the income for his large family.

They first came to Throckmorton County in 1911, following the loss of their oldest daughter Otha Allison (born 7/19/1899) to typhoid fever at the age of 11. They farmed the land at New Town on the Old Allison place. In 1913 they went back to the canyon in Eastland County and stayed until 1918. They returned to Throckmorton county and farmed the land at New Town until 1924. They bought a farm south of Woodson, where they lived until James passed away in 1929 at the age of 53. Bessie sold the farm in 1947 and lived with her children until her death in 1979 at the age of 100 years, 2 months and 3 days. James and Bessie are both buried at the Woodson cemetery, Throckmorton Co., Texas. James and Bessie had 14 children- 8 boys( 1 stillborn in 1897-98 and six girls.
