John is the son of William "Wiley" Steed and Nancy Steed.

John mustered into Company C (Campbell Rangers), 35th Georgia Infantry as 2nd Sergeant on September 17, 1861. He was elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant on July 22, 1862 and elected 2nd Lieutenant in October 1862. He was elected Captain on June 10, 1863. He was wounded at Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. He surrendered his company at Appomattox, Virginia on April 7, 1865.
