In 1860, he was a laborer living in Turbett Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Diana Matthews and fathered Angeline (b. @1861), William J. (b. @1863), Laura J. (b. 04/05/74 [but is eleven in the 1880 census] - married an Ellinger), Mary (b. 12/30/74 [?] - married a Hollenbaugh), Villa Catherine (b. 10/15/75 - married Peter King Rice), and John S. L. (b. @1878).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five in Mifflintown, Juniata County, August 3, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Co. F, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, but deserted to date September 18, 1862. He was apprehended, charged $31.70 for cost of arrest, and ordered to complete his term of service. Since the 126th Pennsylvania Infantry had ceased to exist, on December 8, 1863, he was assigned to Co. K 105th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded in the left leg on May 8, 1864, during the Overland Campaign, one document in his compiled military service records describes the injury as "severe" while another says "slight" with the former more likely the case. On May 12, he was admitted to Campbell U.S. Hospital in Washington DC, furloughed five days later, and honorably discharged at term's end to date September 27, 1864, while on furlough. He is in the company register and his compiled military service records with a middle initial of "A."

He died at his home in from "pulmonary tuberculosis."
