COLFAX — Gordon Ehlers, 93, of Colfax passed away at 4:57 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 20, 2019) at home surrounded by his family.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019, at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Colfax. Burial will be in Wiley Cemetery, Colfax. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Eastern McLean County Ambulance Association or Gibson Area Hospital.

Gordon was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Strawn, the son of Carl and Melinda Timcke Ehlers. He married Anna Darlene Isaacs on Aug. 31, 1947, in Gibson City. She died May 12, 2010, in Colfax.

Surviving are his children, Linda (Vince) Hanson of Colfax, Gary (Evelyn) Ehlers of Towanda, Denise (Brian) Park of Stanford, Diana (Bill) Kemmer of Sibley and Randy (Donna) Ehlers of Normal; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Carroll Ehlers, Eileen Abel, Norma George, Russell Ehlers and Bonnie Ribbe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Roger Ehlers.

Gordon was a World War II Army veteran, recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was very proud to have served his country. He was a member of the Davis-Kerber American Legion Post, Colfax. He entered the service for training on June 5, 1944, serving in Germany, France and Italy before being wounded on March 15, 1945. After several months in the hospital recovering from his injuries, he returned home on Nov. 21, 1945.

After the service, Gordon was a dairy and crop farmer prior to purchasing a milk route in 1961. During this time, he hauled to dairies in Colfax, Pontiac, Minonk and Laesch Dairy in Bloomington, retiring in 1990.

During retirement, Gordon worked part-time for the IRS and was the mayor of Colfax for several years. However, his favorite job during retirement was mowing lawns for others in Colfax, even at the age of 91.
