Eliza Valentine was apparently the first wife of Clark Mills. Susan was perhaps the second. Some trees have Susan married to Julius Howell and living in Massachusetts in 1850. Other trees have casually lumped Eliza and Susan together as one person. In the obituary for Clark Mills (Evening Star, January 12, 1883, Image 4), Susan is not mentioned by name and Eva, a well-known singer, is named as a stepdaughter of Clark. This would support the theory that Eva was Susan's child from a previous marriage. No wife was listed with Clark in the 1860 DC census.

MILLS. On Friday, Oct. 14, 1887, at her residence, 1226 Massachusetts avenue, SUSAN E. MILLS, widow of the late Clark Mills, and mother of Miss Eva Mills, of this city.

Funeral Saturday, 15th, at 3 o'clock p.m., at her late residence. Relatives and friends invited.

Mrs. Susan Howell, wife of the late Clark Mills, of Washington, DC, died at her home in that city a few days since. She was a sister of the late R. C. and Sands N. Kenyon of this place, also of Palmer Kenyon of Syracuse.
