William Switzer was born and raised in Kentucky, and when a young man during the Civil War joined the Confederate army but was soon captured and placed in a Union prison camp. He eventually escaped and with help from sympathetic strangers made his way back home to Kentucky. After marrying, he moved his family to Flagstaff, Arizona where they settled for some time. He later migrated to southern California. The Switzer name can still be found in Flagstaff, and there is the old Switzer Covered Bridge near Frankfort, Kentucky.
