OBITUARY: - Rebecca Claire Levant - November 22, 1944 - January 13, 2019

As were her wishes, Rebecca passed away at her own home, surrounded by loved ones. During her battle with cancer, Rebecca found comfort and joy in a loving partner, in deep connections to family and friends, and in the consolations of music and Judaism.

Rebecca was born in Edmonton to Edgar Levant and his wife Sarah ("Sally", later Sally Promislow). Growing up in Winnipeg, Rebecca enjoyed a warm Jewish home and Hebrew school at the Talmud Torah. During high school in Regina, while excelling in academics and partaking in Jewish youth groups, Rebecca took to music and especially to drama - including, at the age of 14, being the first woman in Canada to play the role of Anne Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank and garnering scholarships from the Canada Council and other accolades.

Encouraged by Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father, to "keep to your ideals and fight for them," the role was among the first of Rebecca's life-long embodiments of the Jewish notion of tikkun olam (essentially to act in the interest of the welfare of society at large, literally "repair of the world") - which later included: multi-faith collaborations that promoted understanding; capacity building with First Nations and the Inuit; progressive approaches in school counselling and with individuals with disabilities and developmental disorders; and especially through a commitment to the transcendent power of music (as a performer, releasing albums of Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jewish music in their Yiddish and Ladino languages).

Rebecca lived life to the fullest and was an inspiration to do so intellectually, culturally, and artistically. Her life was one of fearless pursuits on many fronts and of achievements in her own terms - of integrity, compassion, and connection with family and friends, with community and tradition, and across cultural boundaries.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, January 15, at the New Jewish Memorial Chapel and Cemetery (17818 37th Street SW).
