From The Desert Sun (Palm Springs, California) - January 8, 2016:
Esther Verlene Hawker Brothers of Indio, California passed away peacefully, comforted by family, on December 29, 2015. She was 93. Born December 3, 1922 in Menan, Idaho to Amy Fulmer and Arthur Albert Hawker, Esther was married Sept 30, 1940 in Clayton Georgia, to James David Brothers, and died in Palm Desert, California of Leukemia. Esther is preceded in death by her husband, David; daughter, Sandra Jay Brothers Graham; parents Amy Fullmer and Albert Hawker; and all her siblings: Victor, Alberta, Ronald, Harold, Ila and David. Esther is survived by many nieces and nephews across the country.
After marrying, Esther joined the Navy, serving at the Oakland Supply Depot in California and David served as SeaBee in the South Pacific. After their service, they moved to Salt Lake City, then Idaho Falls where Esther and David adopted Sandy, their daughter. Esther worked at the Ford Dealership, then opened the "Automotive Credit Union." Over her career, she rescued two failing credit unions and merged other credit unions into one unified "Medical and Professional Credit Union." She led her credit unions into the computer age and was passionate about empowering women to manage money. She was elected "Boss of the Year" and "Business Woman of the Year," retiring in 1987.
Sandy, died in 1996 from lung cancer and David died shortly after. Esther then settled permanently in Indio. She generously gave love, reflexology and counseling to anyone who came to her door, and volunteered at the Palm Springs Art Museum and JFK Hospital in Indio, California. Esther lived a deeply spiritual life, based on her LDS roots: "loving Jesus Christ and all God's children." She is remembered for her independence, wisdom, loving ways, healing touch and humorous escapades. In lieu of flowers please send donations to www.feedthechildren.org; http://www.cityofhope.org/ or http://www.bgca.org/. The memorial service will be held 1:00pm, Sunday, January 10th, 2016 at Rancho Casa Blanca's Community Center, Avenue 44 & Golf Center Pkwy, Indio, CA 92203.
