OWEN HAMMOND
Owen D. Hammond, 70, mayor of Eden, died of cancer June 12 at his home.
Born Nov 5, 1915, in Carroll County, Ark., he married Fay Matlock at Blue Eye, Mo., in 1935. They were later divorced. He moved to Eden in 1953, where he married Minerva Murphey Doramus, June 12, 1955, and continued living in Eden. After moving from Arkansas, he worked for the North Side Canal Co. for 13 years. He worked for the city of Eden as chief of police and maintenance for 14 years, until his retirement in 1980. After his retirement, he was appointed mayor and held the position until the time of his death.
Mr. Hammond was a charter member of Eden Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he has been first elder and Sabbath school teacher. He had been a volunteer member of the Valley Quick Response Unit for several years. He played harmonica for senior centers, CSI programs, retirement homes, and private parties.
Surviving are his wife of Eden; a daughter, Velta Jean Pope of Chelsea, Okal.; a son, Russell Dean Hammond of Hazelton; a stepdaughter, Betty Matlock Watters of Covina, Calif.; two stepsons, Ralph Doramus of Portland and Dale Doramus of Spokane; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Chester Hammond of Eden.
A funeral was Monday in the Twin Falls Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Richard Fearing officiating.
Burial was in the Filer IOOF Cemetery.
