John Childress Barrow was born December 31, 1819 in Davidson County, Tennessee, the third of five children born to Matthew Barrow and Martha Patsy "Mattie"(Childress) Barrow.
His four siblings include; Nancy E. (Barrow) Pilcher, James Barrow, Matthew Barrow and Martha Louise (Barrow) Torbett.
He married Elizabeth S. (Loftin) Barrow in 1846 in Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Thomas Loftin and Catherine W. (Edwards) Loftin.
They were the parents of three children: Catherine "Kate" (Barrow) Marable, Helen (Barrow) Read, Henry Crabb Barrow.
He served as a Private in the Confederate Tennessee Infantry.
John passed away in December 10, 1869 at his home in Nashville, Davidson county, Tennessee and was laid to rest in the Barrow Hill Cemetery on the Barrow family plantation in Madison, Davidson county, Tennessee. The entire cemetery was later moved to Mount Olivet Cemetery, located in Nashville, Davidson county, Tennessee.
