Hall of Fame College Football Coach. Played quarterback at the U. S. Naval Academy all four seasons, graduating in 1956. Named a first-team All-American at quarterback in 1955 and finished third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy that season. After fulfilling his military obligation, served as an assistant coach under Rip Engle and Joe Paterno, at Penn State, from 1963 to 1972. In 1973, became head coach at the Naval Academy, leading the Midshipmen to a a record of 55–46–1, including three bowl game appearances. Was the service academy's most successful coach (until 2014). Head coach at the University of Virginia from 1982 to 2000, finishing with a record of 134-86-3, achieved Atlantic Coast Conference titles in 1989 and 1995 and 12 bowl appearances, the most successful coach in UVA history. Named Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year in 1991 and ACC Coach of the year four times. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2004 and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
