Ammon Pettit is the son of Ira Pettit (1812-1896) and his wife Mary Ann Brower Pettit (1816-1893). Both were born in Hempstead, New York, and died and are buried in Salt Lake City, Utah. The birth and death dates are recorded in the Journal of Ethan Pettit, brother of Ira. Ethan Pettit's Journal includes names and birth and death dates of his parents, his brothers and sisters, and other relatives. No tombstone has been found for Ammon's burial at the Pettit Cemetery in Oceanside, but his father, Ira Pettit, owned the Parsonage Farm on which the Pettit Cemetery was located and his brother Ethan Pettit (1847-1848), who was born and died only a few years earlier, is recorded as being buried there. Ammon is a name of a religious leader in the Book of Mormon. His being given that name indicates indicates that his parents were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he was born.
