John initially declared his intentions to marry Rebekah Taylor, daughter of Peter Taylor; however, Rebekah passed away just one month after the declaration was made. John married Jane Minshall, daughter of John Minshall and Sarah Smedley, in 1776. They married out of meeting, for which they were disowned, although his wife later made acknowledgement for her deviation from procedure, and her acknowledgement was accepted.

"Genealogy of the Smedley Family, descended from George and Sarah Smedley, settlers in Chester County, Pennsylvania : with brief notices of other families of the name, and abstracts of early English wills : published pursuant to the will of Samuel Lightfoot Smedley, of Philadelphia, Pa." by Gilbert Cope has both John and his wife buried this cemetery.
