Joanne Burgess returned home to her Heavenly Father on January 2, 2019. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Ogden, Utah to Phillip and Betty Brophy. She was the oldest of 7 children.

Joanne graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 1965 and then attended Weber State College. In 1967, she married Jim Wadman and together they had two children, Deanna and Jimmy. After her divorce, Joanne married Lynn Adams in 1975 and was married to him for 33 years until his death in October 2008. Joanne was then blessed to meet and marry Richard Burgess in 2011.

Joanne was known for being a hard worker in all aspects of her life. Throughout the time she lived in Utah, California and Arizona, she loved working in many different roles in the medical field. She also owned her own craft business, owned a restaurant, managed a convenience store and spent some time working as a real estate agent.

The hallmark of Joanne’s life was loving and serving others. Joanne loved spending time gardening and then canning and cooking the fruits of her labors to share with family, friends, and neighbors. Joanne joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1977 and remained an active member her entire life. She served in many different callings including Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society Presidency member, and cub scout leader. In the past few years, she and Rick loved serving together as Family History Missionaries and Ogden, Utah temple workers. Joanne dedicated her life to the pursuit of becoming like her Savior, Jesus Christ.

Joanne was preceded in death by her grandparents; her mother, Betty Brophy; her sister, Frances Hadley; and her mother-in-law, Lois Burgess. She is survived by her loving husband, Richard Burgess; her children, Deanna (Mike) Reed, James (Marnie) Wadman, Lora (John) Collier, Bobby Adams, Wade Adams, Shane Adams, Monte Adams, Roy (Jamie) Adams; her father, Phillip Brophy; her father-in-law Fenton Burgess; her sisters, Patricia (Bob) Ropelato, Kathy (Joe) LeBlanc, Peggy (Bob) Smith, Mary (Tim) Ellis; her brother, Edward (Lori) Brophy; and her grandchildren; Cody, Tyler, Braxton, Kelton, Megan, Cheyanne, Bailee, Brock, and Greta. She was blessed with seven great grand-children; Bradley, Sophia, Riley, Alex, Kai, Theo and baby Willow. Joanne is also survived and loved by many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and their families.

Consistent with the theme of her life, in one final act of selfless service, Joanne made the decision to donate her body to the University of Utah for the further study of ALS.

Our thanks go out to the many family members and friends who have loved and supported Joanne especially during the past few months. We appreciate so much and send a special thank you to the loving staff from AFI Advanced Care Home Health and Hospice.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Westwood Ward, 2123 North 2000 West, Farr West, Utah 84404. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you donate to a charity of your choice.
