GEORGE OSBOURNE, AGED ACTOR, DIES

First Appearance in San Francisco at Old Baldwin

San Francisco - Another of the "old guard" of the theater in the West, whose name links the present with the very beginning of things dramatic in California, is dead. George Osbourne, associate of Wallenrod and Stockwell at the Alcazar, died on August 11 at his home, 3397 Clay street, of apoplexy. Osbourne's real surname was Gedge. He adopted the more euphonious name of Osbourne when he went on the stage. He was a grandson of Admiral John Gedge, famous British naval officer, and was born in 1848 in Tasmania.

His father, a sea captain, brought him to San Francisco when he was just a lad. He is survived by his widow, who was well known to dramatic fame a generation ago, as Helen Mason, and by a brother, Dr. Donald Gedge of this city.

Osbourne's first appearance as an actor in this city was with the old Baldwin theater stock company when Tom Maguire was the manager. His last was as Junipero Serra in the San Gabriel Mission play, produced in 1914 at the Columbia Theater. Of late years Osbourne has passed much of his time in retirement, though his success In the Mission play and in pictures kept him comparatively busy. At the time of the fire in 1906 he was at the Alcazar, where he had been playing roles of old men for six years under Belasco & Mayer.

His last role there was In "Are You a Mason?" which was being produced at the Alcazar In the memorable April of 1906.

When George was born the Island of Tasmania, it was known as Van Diemen's Land.
George and his family were living in San Francisco as seen in the California 1852 Census
