The son of John & Sarah (Bittinger) Baughman and apparently the stepson of Susan Baughman, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Greencastle, Franklin County, August 2, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 7 as a private with Co. K, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 20, 1863. His obituary in the Franklin Repository erroneously claims he was wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. He was struck in the elbow at the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, hospitalized at Point Lookout in St. Mary's County, Maryland, and honorably discharged with his company May 20, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Chambersburg January 25, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 3 as a private with Co. D, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.

He married Susan Ritter in 1864 between enlistments and fathered Lettie Katherine (b. 07/07/67 - married a Brindle), Anna Bessie (b. 05/20/68), Granville Rutter (b. 11/13/71), and Margaret Knight (b. 04/03/81). He died at his home at the reported age of 80-1-23, a member of Fayetteville's Stevens Post No. 317, G.A.R.
