Lloyd James Streif, 90, of Sageville, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018, at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by family.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque, where there will be a prayer service at 3 p.m. The East Dubuque American Legion Post 787 will walk through at 6 p.m. Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 27, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Fr. Dwayne Thoman will officiate. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum, Mount Calvary Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the East Dubuque American Legion Post 787.
Lloyd was born September 30, 1928 in Des Moines, the son of Lloyd and Rita (Pasbach) Streif. He moved to Dubuque in 1934, and graduated from St. Raphael and Loras Academy in 1946. He married Ann Runde on May 20, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. She preceded him in death on April 19, 2008.
Lloyd worked as a farm hand through high school. After high school, he became a logger for Elmo Jamison, Stanley Stoffel, and Oscar Bruggemann. In 1951, he entered the Army and spent 16 months with the 10th Corps Combat Engineers in North Korea, where he operated a bulldozer. While on R&R, he was the 50,000th soldier to march through Camp Drake, Yokahama, Japan, and was the mayor of Yokahama for a day, and was presented with the key to the city. He was the first foreigner to ever be the mayor of a city in Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. He was honored to participate in the Honor Flight in 2010. Upon his return, he was a heavy equipment operator for Fay Steger Construction and Fondell & Sons. Highlights of the time included constructing Dubuque’s flood wall and excavating many roads and subdivisions. From 1976 to 1991, he worked for John Deere demonstrating construction equipment in numerous countries on five continents.
Upon retirement, he began a career in community service. Lloyd and George Wilson volunteered over 4,000 hours in building the Dubuque Soccer Complex. The Dubuque Arboretum was the next project—building the Japanese Garden, working on the Brown Team, and serving on the Board of Directors for many years.
Lloyd and Ann raised their family of four in the town of Sageville. Always a hard worker, Lloyd spent countless hours tending to his gardens, orchard, hunting, fishing, and boating on the Mississippi. He loved teaching his kids and others to enjoy the outdoors as he did.
Lloyd is survived by four children, Carol Gebhart of Dubuque, James (Lori) Streif of Dubuque, Joleen (Brian) Jacque of Dyersville, and Robert (Sheri Lowe) Streif of Dubuque; grandchildren Kelsey and Derek Streif, Carter and Lauren Shaull, and Braden and Ava Gebhart; step grandchildren Dustin, Lucas, and Maci Jacque; a brother Daniel (Roxanne) Streif of Dubuque; two sisters Mary Ann O’Hara of Dubuque and Beverly DeValera of CA; a brother in law, David Schmitt of Madison, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his brother David, his sister Maggie Weiland; and his in-laws, Dick O’Hara, Marian (Red) Hauth, Florence Helgeson, Elaine Schmitt, Donald (Vi) Runde, and Richard (Eloyse) Runde.
