John A. Ayers, 84, of Wytheville died Tuesday, May 22, 2007. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the Black Lick Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Don Stansell officiating. American Legion Post 9 will conduct graveside military rites. He spent most of his life in Maryland where he retired from the National Institute of Health. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, received the Purple Heart and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Ralph S. Tagg Jr. Chapter 14. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ambrose and Sally Ayers. Survivors include his wife, Ovella Crigger Ayers of Wytheville; a daughter, Lisa Russell of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Robin Ayers of Max Meadows; six sisters, Pam Fisher, Natalie Clownser and Rachel Edds, all of Florida, Ruth Biggs of Michigan, Jewell Hiser of Virginia and Mary Harnest of West Virginia; a brother, Noel Atkins of West Virginia; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Association; or the Black Lick Cemetery Association, c/o Mrs. Mary N. Cassell, 1040 Queen's Knob, Wytheville, VA 24382. Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
