The son of George Luther Hedger, Sr. and Georgia Hartzell, "Bill" married (Living) Arnold on 04 Jun 1966 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois. They were the parents of 3 children.

Bill began his military career in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from high school. He served his enlistment and received an honorable discharge. After that he enlisted in the United States Army and served for 20 years.

During his distinguished career in the service, he was mainly in Artillery. He served in Vietnam and was awarded a Silver Star, Purple Heart and Meritorious Service Award. He retired at the age of 37 as a sergeant first class.

Bill then went to work for the Army Corp of Engineers. He was a Lock Master at the Alton Dam in Madison County, Illinois for 20 years.

He was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed making furniture, including several pieces for his grandchildren. He developed a reputation as the neighborhood maintenance man and loved to cut grass on his Kubota tractor. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, and especially his grandchildren.

Bill died at his home 9 days before his 78th birthday.

He was survived by his wife of 52 years; 2 daughters and 1 son-in-law; 1 son and 1 daughter-in-law; 7 grandchildren; 1 sister of Bourbon, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother and father, Bill was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Visitation was held on 19 Dec 2018 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grafton. It was continued there the following morning. A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. on 20 Dec 2018 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Meridith Funeral Home in Highland, Illinois was in charge of arrangements.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the American Heart Association.
