Dorothy Mae Barnett was born on January 24th, 1931 in Brownfield, Illinois to Beulah (Hill) Coleman and Theodore Scott. She was raised on a farm in Brownfield where she attended public school, helped with gardening, feeding chickens and rode her beloved horse Fanny. Her grandmother, Lula Hill, taught her to sew which grew into a lifelong passion. When Dorothy was just six years old, she experienced the great flood of 1937 and often told the story of watching a steamboat travel past the house before the water receded.
When she was about 19 years old Dorothy and her dear cousin Mary Evelyn (Polk) went to visit their Uncle Jack in Indianapolis, Indiana. They loved the city so much they decided to stay. Soon after arriving in Indianapolis, she was introduced to the love of her life, Carl Barnett, Jr. They were married in October of 1951. This union produced three sons and a daughter and lasted until Carl died in December of 1994.
Dorothy was a doting mother, loving wife and homemaker. She enjoyed making money taking in ironing as well as working outside the home for Paul Harris and Indianapolis Public Schools. Dorothy loved fishing with her husband and her son, Carl. She also loved gardening, cooking, going to the casino and out to lunch for crab legs. She was often content sitting quietly with her sewing which produced beautiful embroidered quilts.
Dorothy departed Saturday, December 1, 2018, in Indianapolis, Indiana at 87 years of age.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Portia Ruth Barnett, her mother Beulah Coleman, and her husband Carl Barnett, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Carl G Barnett (Jeanette), Bryan L. Barnett, Timothy Barnett (Annice), her grandchildren, Shaun, Aspen, Cierra, Christopher, Joshua, Abigail, Caleb, three great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
