Martha was the daughter of Thomas Hugh Cooper and Martha Eller Albea. She was born in Zion, which was in Yadkin County at that time. Her siblings were Robert Edward Lee, William Alexander, Lamar Hugh, Mary Ellen, Betsy Royall, Ernest Colvert, Frances Mae, Carrie Kate and Nellie Cooper.

She had typhoid fever twice while still living in North Carolina. She moved to Pendleton, Madison County, Indiana to live with her uncle, Charles Zachariah Albea when his wife, Mary Ellen (Bussell), died in 1894 to help take care of their two children.

She married William Clark Bush about 1926. They did not have any children.
