Eldon Blackburn
Eldon Kay (E.K.) Blackburn, the original Grandpa "B", passed away suddenly on Friday December 14th, 2018 in Hurricane, Utah. He was born in Salina, Utah on November 8th, 1944 to Wayne and Ione Nelson Blackburn (both deceased). He was very proud of his Pioneer heritage and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survived by his wife of 54 years, Candice Hunt Blackburn, sons Tim Blackburn (Stephanie) and Todd Blackburn (Jonia). He truly loved his six grandkids - Hannah Onkes (Mitchell), Hayden (Shelby), Henry, Chloe Karren (Dallas), Hallie, Olivia, and Great-Grandchildren Finn and Leo Onkes.
His experiences around Wayne County traversing the Parker, Boulder and Fishlake Mountains shaped his early life while helping with the family farm & ranch. It was this lifestyle that ingrained in Kay a strong work ethic. Also, the Capitol Reef area, surrounding desert and the Henry Mountains were visited many times and added to his trove of stories.
He was a graduate of Wayne High School class of '63 and had recently hosted their 55th reunion at Sand Hollow State Park Sand Dunes near his home.
Kay was one of the youngest operators for Standard Oil (later Chevron) and also the Union 76 Corp. His occupation as a service station owner would be a launching pad for his passion of racing jeeps and cars. Family vacations consisted of summer jeep-racing adventures from Wyoming to California. He would go on to work for Robinson Trucking and Western General Dairies. He retired in 2006 from Dairy Farmers of America as a Field Rep. Good friends from the dairy business have stayed in touch from his travels around Utah, Colorado and Nevada.
He enjoyed boating and fishing with friends and family. Many good memories were made at the family cabin in Bear Lake after his retirement. He was always the best water-skier, boat captain and fishing guide! Always up for a good story and sharing advice, he frequently had his photo album handy to show pictures of his latest catch.
One of his greatest traits was serving others. Many widows and elderly neighbors benefited from his friendly service. After moving to Dixie Springs he acquired a new "pit-crew" of RZR riding buddies where he was able to continue riding and racing in the dunes. It was here he earned the nickname of "The Sheriff" for his opinionated comments and directing those that needed direction!
A gathering for family and friends who wish to celebrate his life will be held Saturday December 22nd, 2018 starting at 12:30PM.
Location: 2nd Ward Building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, (Cultural Hall), 675 West 200 South, Richfield, UT 84701.
Per his wishes, he will be cremated. Interment will be at a later date, Bicknell, Utah cemetery. A private family viewing was held December 16th, 2018.
