Madeline Gove Millett, age 98, Alexandria Bay, NY passed away Tuesday, December 4th at River Hospital in Alexandria Bay.
Madeline was born on July 25, 1920, in Alexandria Bay, the daughter of Arthur E. (DOD 4/16/1920) and Nellie Mae Marcott Gove (DOD 5/22/1931).
She was a 1937 graduate of Alexandria Central School. Madeline married Herbert (Bertie) Raymond Millett on January 16, 1943 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where Bertie was training for the glider division of the 82nd Airborne. Bertie passed away on April 19, 2006.
While spending most of her life as a housewife, Madeline’s work experience also included factory employment in Rochester, NY at a major defense plant during WWII and numerous summer jobs in Alexandria Bay. In her earlyretirement years she enjoyed working aboard yachts traveling on the inter-coastal waterway between the 1000 Islands and Florida. Madeline also owned and operated camp rentals at Wintergreen Island in Goose Bay for many years. There were frequent campers on their Cork Island in Goose Bay as well.
She loved boating and swimming in the clear waters of the St. Lawrence River. Madeline and Bertie spent 30 years wintering in Naples, FL. She was an avid golfer in the Alex Bay Ladies Golf League, a member of Home Bureau, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and St Cyril’s Catholic Church.
Madeline has two surviving children: Beverly VanBrocklin, Alexandria Bay; and Robert E. Millett (Cathy), Baldwinsville, NY. She had seven grandchildren: Gary (Amy) VanBrocklin, Panama City, FL; Janica Vanbrocklin, Clearwater, FL; Amy Shunk (Robert), Adams Center, NY; Troy (Angela) Millett, Macon, GA; Michael Millett, Naples, FL; and Andrea and Matthew (Dina) Millett, Manhattan, NY. Five great-grandchildren, Garick (Zoe) VanBrocklin. Emma Shunk, Cole, Avery, and Abigail Millett and one great-great-grandchild, Wilder VanBrocklin, survive her. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Karen Millett, step daughters and step-granddaughters; and her two nieces, Barbara Marsaw, Hammond, and Bonnie Stewart, Calcium, NY. Her son Raymond Millett (DOD 11/8/2015) and her grandson, Douglas Millett (DOD 4/2/1970) predeceased her as well as her three brothers: Alton Gove (DOD 5/9/1958); Cyril “Ellis” Gove (DOD 7/1/1956) and Robert Gove (DOD 7/7/2002).
